The Year 1 classroom buzzed with excitement as Mags, the Animal Ark keeper, arrived with her special guests: a tortoise, a tarantula, a snake, a frog, a cockroach, and a hedgehog! The children’s eyes lit up as each creature made its appearance and Mags explained the unique features of each animal and how they fit into different animal groups—reptiles, amphibians, insects, arachnids, and mammals.
The tortoise, with its hard shell, was a favourite, slowly making its way across the carpet while the children marvelled at its tough skin and beak-like mouth. The snake slithered smoothly, and we learnt about how reptiles have scales to keep them safe. Some brave children even volunteered to have a hold! We met a tarantula and even touched its hairy legs! Gasps filled the room as they watched the frog hop and learned how amphibians live both on land and in water. The children loved meeting Beatrix the hedgehog with her soft tummy and prickly spikes; we had to stay super quiet, so she was brave enough come and say hello! The children were captivated learning about habitats, diets, and the special traits that made each animal unique.
