PE & Sports Premium
At our school, we believe that every child deserves the opportunity to lead a healthy and active life. A positive experience of sport and physical activity from a young age can foster lifelong participation, supporting the government’s vision for a world-class education system.
Engaging in regular physical activity provides numerous benefits for children’s physical health and mental wellbeing. Active children are generally happier, more resilient, and more socially confident. Physical activity has been shown to boost self-esteem, reduce anxiety and depression, and encourage children to develop trust in their peers. Additionally, ensuring pupils engage in sufficient daily activity can lead to improvements in behaviour and academic performance across the school.
The government’s School Sport and Activity Action Plan highlights its commitment to ensuring that every child has access to at least 60 minutes of sport and physical activity each day. This includes a recommendation of 30 minutes within the school day, in accordance with the Chief Medical Officers’ guidelines which suggest an average of at least 60 minutes of activity per day across the week.
The PE and Sport Premium funding supports primary schools in achieving these goals. As part of a new package, the government has committed over £600 million across the next two academic years (2023-24 & 2024-25) to continue the Primary PE and Sport Premium. This funding will help schools improve the quality of PE and sport, enabling children to benefit from regular activity. In addition, schools are encouraged to deliver a minimum of 2 hours of curriculum PE each week, with further support available through a refreshed School Sport Action Plan.
