After a morning adventure at Magpie Mine, Year 5 arrived at the Youth Hostel in the afternoon in Eyam, the historic “Plague Village.”. Without wasting any time, they dropped off their bags and set off up the hill to visit Mompesson’s Well.
This well, along with the famous boundary stone, played a crucial role during the time of the Plague. It was here that the villagers of Eyam exchanged money for food with neighbouring villages, ensuring no direct contact and helping to contain the spread of disease.
During their visit, the children gathered around to hear Mrs Fenton read The Kiss of Death, a gripping story by Malcom Rose, which brought the history of the Plague to life. To their amazement, they also made a fascinating discovery in the nearby stream, adding an extra element of excitement to their day!
