On Thursday, our Year 6 children enjoyed a fantastic educational visit to Hull as part of their learning about Black History and the Transatlantic Slave Trade.
The main part of our visit was to Wilberforce House Museum, the birthplace of William Wilberforce, who played an important role in the campaign to abolish the slave trade in Britain.
The children took part in a fascinating workshop where they explored historical artefacts, including items belonging to William Wilberforce himself. They learnt more about his life, his beliefs and his determination to bring about change. The workshop also helped the children understand the terrible impact of the Transatlantic Slave Trade and the experiences of those who were enslaved.
Through discussions and practical activities, the children learnt about the important role played by enslaved people, former slaves and other abolitionists who worked tirelessly to bring an end to the slave trade. It was a valuable opportunity to reflect on the importance of freedom, equality and treating everyone with dignity and respect.
As well as visiting Wilberforce House, the children had the opportunity to explore two other museums in Hull.
At the Hull and East Riding Museum, they travelled back in time, discovering fascinating exhibits from prehistoric times through to Roman Britain. There was plenty to see, including a woolly mammoth and Viking artefacts!
At the Streetlife Museum, the children explored over 200 years of transport history. They enjoyed seeing old trams, classic cars and other forms of transport, discovering how travel has changed over time.
It was a wonderful day filled with learning, discovery and lots of interesting questions. The visit helped bring our classroom learning to life and gave the children a deeper understanding of an important and difficult part of history.
We were particularly proud of how our Year 6 children represented St Marie’s throughout the day. They showed great interest, asked thoughtful questions and demonstrated maturity and respect when discussing some challenging subjects.
Well done, Year 6! You were fantastic ambassadors for our school.
