Faith in Action: Year 6 visit Hull

On Wednesday, our Year 6 children visited Wilberforce House Museum in Hull as part of their learning about the Transatlantic Slave Trade.

The highlight of the trip was an engaging and informative workshop where the children explored real artefacts, many of which once belonged to William Wilberforce himself. Through these objects, they learned about Wilberforce’s life, his strong Christian faith, and his fight to end the slave trade. The session encouraged thoughtful discussion and included hands-on activities that helped the children understand the people and stories behind this important period in history.

As part of the visit, the children also explored two other museums — the Hull and East Riding Museum and the Streetlife Museum. At the Hull and East Riding Museum, they discovered how people lived from prehistoric times through to Roman Britain, even meeting a life-sized woolly mammoth! At the Streetlife Museum, they enjoyed stepping back in time to explore 200 years of transport history, climbing aboard trams and looking at vintage vehicles.

The day helped our pupils understand not only the story of Wilberforce and other abolitionists but also the lasting impact of slavery on people and communities around the world. This links closely to our Catholic Social Teaching, reminding us of the importance of respecting the dignity of every human person and standing up for justice and equality.

We are very proud of our Year 6 children for representing our school so well. They showed curiosity, kindness, and great respect throughout the day.
