As the Christmas break starts, children will have more free time at home and may spend longer playing online games.
Gaming is very popular with children in the UK. After watching videos (such as YouTube) and streaming TV or films, gaming is the third most common online activity.
Research from Ofcom shows that 89% of children aged 3–17 play video games. Of these, around 1 in 5 children talk to other players online who they do not know in real life.
This can raise concerns for parents. Common worries include increased screen time, unsuitable content, contact with strangers and spending money within games.
Agreeing some clear rules around gaming can really help. Setting limits on time, choosing age-appropriate games and talking regularly with your child about what they are playing are all good steps.
